He began playing percussion and music around age 15 in Central America. He plays Congas, Bongos, Cajon, Pandero and Timbales. Known by Michelou or Miguelito, he came to New Orleans in 1973 and has lived here ever since. He married his wife Linda in 1976 and they have one son Stephen and one granddaughter Chrissy. His nice and very calm personality always has been his way to play, and everybody in the City love him like a great friend and lovely and honest person he always was. Over the past three decades he has played in various venues all over the city including, Snug Harbor, Blue Nile, House of Blues, and in so many Jazz Fest and French Quarter Festival. Some of the many groups he has played with include Julio and Cesar, Paky Saavedra’s Bandido, Riccardo Crespo & Sol Brasil, Rudy’s Carribean Funk, Accustic Swiftness, Fredy Omar & His Band. Three years ago Miguelito was diagnosed with Alzeimer’s disease and last month he got a mild stroke that makes his life more difficult for talking and walking. Michelou has no medical insurance and no retirement plan either. We are promoting this Benefit Concert to get some money to help him pay some medical expenses. Cuban percussionist Humberto “Pupi” Menes had a stroke on September 18, 2009 and his being treated at the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic (NOMC). Pupi is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest congueros in the city. He has played with Ruben Gonzales, Hector Gallardo, Santiago and Pedro Cruz, Iguanas. He is a key member of both Fredy Omar con su Banda and Otra!
